Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about DocuStash — your secure renewal reminder and document vault app.
Security & Encryption
DocuStash encrypts all documents using AES-256, the cipher standard mandated by governments and financial institutions worldwide. Encryption is performed on your device before any data is transmitted. The encryption key is generated locally and is never sent to or stored on our servers. Your data is protected at rest, in transit, and in cloud storage. A compromise of our cloud infrastructure would yield only ciphertext - computationally indecipherable without your device key.
No. Encryption is performed on your device using a key that exists only on that device. DocuStash has no technical capability to view, read, or access your documents. This is a property of the architecture, not a matter of policy. The corollary is that we cannot recover your data if you lose your passphrase - an acceptable trade-off for a system that cannot be overridden by court order, data breach, or internal misconduct.
No. DocuStash does not sell, license, or transmit user data to any third party - not to analytics providers, insurance comparison platforms, advertisers, or any other party. Your data does not leave the application except at your explicit instruction.
Privacy & Offline Use
Yes. DocuStash is built on an offline-first architecture. Adding policies, viewing documents, receiving notifications, and managing your vault all function without an internet connection. Data is stored locally on your device. Cloud synchronisation is an opt-in feature for users who require backup or multi-device access; it is not required and can remain permanently disabled.
Cloud storage is entirely optional. Within Settings, you may select local-only storage mode, under which no data - no files, no metadata, no usage information - leaves your device. DocuStash operates as a fully functional application in this mode indefinitely. No account is required.
If cloud backup is enabled, your encrypted vault can be restored on a new device upon sign-in. Documents are encrypted before upload; cloud-stored data is protected identically to data held locally. If you have opted for local-only mode, your data exists solely on the lost device. For most users, cloud backup represents the appropriate balance between privacy and continuity.
Reminders & Notifications
Yes. Reminder delivery time is configurable to any hour you specify. The advance notice period is also adjustable - 90, 60, 30, or 7 days before expiry - or you may set a custom interval. Multiple reminder intervals can be applied to a single item. All scheduling is handled locally on your device; no server connection is required for notifications to fire.
The free tier includes 30-day and 7-day advance reminders. Premium extends this to 90 and 60 days, with support for custom intervals. Pro permits fully arbitrary date-and-time alerts and allows multiple reminders to be stacked against a single item - for example, a 90-day initial notice, a 30-day follow-up, and a 7-day final alert.
Yes. All reminders are scheduled as local device notifications. They do not depend on a server, an internet connection, or a push notification service. Notifications fire directly from your device at the scheduled time, regardless of network availability.
What Can I Track?
No. DocuStash tracks any document or obligation with an expiry or renewal date. Common use cases include car, home, and life insurance; MOT and road tax; vehicle and appliance warranties; gym and streaming subscriptions; tenancy agreements; mortgage renewal dates; broadband contracts; professional licences; and scheduled maintenance records. If it has an expiry date, it can be tracked.
Pro users may define custom categories with custom icons, structured around their own documents rather than a fixed template. Built-in categories that are not relevant can be hidden. The result is a vault that reflects your actual situation - whether that is a property portfolio, a vehicle fleet, or a set of business licences.
Yes. DocuStash stores policy PDFs, certificates, warranty documentation, and photographs of physical documents alongside renewal dates, all encrypted with AES-256 on your device. Documents are accessible immediately from within the app - no portal login, no email search, no guessing which folder they were saved in.
Features & Flexibility
Pro users may export renewal dates as .ics files, compatible with Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and any application supporting the iCalendar standard. Renewal dates appear in your existing calendar without manual entry.
Pro includes item linking, which creates explicit relationships between connected documents. Linking your car insurance, MOT certificate, and road tax, for example, gives you a unified view of all obligations tied to a single vehicle. When a policy renews, the prior version remains in the history chain, providing a clear audit trail.
Individual documents may be shared via your device’s native share function - to a solicitor, broker, or any other recipient. Items can be exported as ZIP archives inclusive of all attachments. Pro users have access to bulk export, enabling download of an entire category or the full vault, suitable for accountants, property transactions, or maintaining an independent local backup.
Pricing & Getting Started
The free tier supports up to three items with 30-day and 7-day reminders, document storage, offline access, and on-device encryption. There are no advertisements, no data sales, and no trial period - it does not expire. Premium (£3.99/month) removes the item limit and adds custom reminder intervals. Pro (£6.99/month or £59.99/year) adds calendar export, custom categories, item linking, and bulk export.
Creating an account takes under two minutes. Download the app from Google Play, register with your email address, verify it, and you are in. From there, tap add, enter a policy name and expiry date, and optionally attach a document or photograph. Your first policy is set up in seconds.
DocuStash is currently available on Android via Google Play. An iOS version is in development. Monitor the Play Store listing or this website for availability updates.
Why DocuStash?
DocuStash combines renewal tracking with an encrypted document vault in a single application. AES-256 encryption is performed on your device. The application operates fully offline. No data is shared with third parties. These are properties of the architecture - they hold regardless of external pressure, changes in ownership, or a breach of our infrastructure.
Spreadsheets do not send push notifications. Email folders do not encrypt their contents or surface a specific document in seconds under time pressure. DocuStash replaces a dispersed arrangement of calendar entries, email folders, and filing cabinets with a single encrypted, searchable vault that proactively alerts you before deadlines arrive.
